Mobile giant Nokia is preparing to launch a new ‘Treasure Tag’ proximity sensor that uses NFC (near field communications) and Bluetooth to help users track and locate physical objects from their phone.
According to a report on The Verge, the Treasure Tag will pair with a Lumia Windows smartphone via NFC.
The device, which comes with a loop, can be strapped to objects like keys or other electronic devices.
Nokia is understood to have built a Treasure Tag app for Windows Phone that will let users locate lost items that are connected to the Tag via a map and the app will emit a notification sound on a paired phone if within range.
The Tag is designed to be “always on” and includes a battery that will last for six months.
Nokia’s move into smart tags is a little overdue. Rivals like Samsung and Sony are already in the marketplace with their respective Tec Tile and Xperia SmartTag devices.
