The Apple iPhone 5s
Apple is understood to be preparing to release a large-screen iPhone 6 that will have 1,704 x 960 resolution versus the 2X resolution of 1,137 x 640 in the current iPhone 5s.
Website 9to5Mac reports that Apple is testing the 1,704 x 960 resolution display for the iPhone 6, which will triple the base resolution of 568 x 320 in the current crop of iPhone 5 devices.
The smartphone’s Retina display will remain in a 16:9 format and the new device will be taller and wider than the current iPhone 5 family, which has a 4-inch screen.
If the device turns out to be 4.7 inches, the new iPhone 6 will have a display density of 416 pixels per inch (PPI).
However, if the device reaches ‘phablet’ proportions at around 5.5 inches, the device would have a display density of 356 PPI.
It is not yet clear whether Apple will go for a 4.7-inch version (most likely) or both versions (less likely) but the new parameters will present challenges for app developers producing apps for iOS.
It is suggested that core user interface elements from iOS functions, such as the Home screen, Notification Center and Settings panels, will be enlarged to suit the new display size.
