Samsung is reportedly looking to make its own mark in the virtual reality (VR) headset market, with a product to be sold alongside its range of mobile devices that could be announced this year.
The South Korean company is far from oblivious to the growing importance of the Facebook-acquired Oculus Rift and Sony’s Project Morpheus, both of which will be looking to connect their VR headsets with their respective products and services, Engadget reported.
The sources that have discussed the South Korean programme have said early prototypes are already being tested and will be powered by Samsung’s Galaxy range, presumably the S5 or S6 when it is released.
In terms of the hardware, the headset is expected to work off an OLED screen with wired connections to whichever device it is connected to, to prevent lagging, which in the past has attributed to motion sickness for the user.
The still un-named VR headset is likely to be marketed as a more affordable entry into the market compared to the Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus, but still at a price that puts it in the range of a luxury tech item.
