Sony reveals new Xperia Z3 range and wearable devices (video)

3 Sep 2014

Russell Keating from Sony Mobile Communications gives us a first look at Sony’s all-new product range, which has been unveiled at IFA 2014 in Berlin.

Keating, senior sales and marketing manager with Sony Mobile Communications, gave us a preview of these five new devices ahead of the unveiling at the electronics expo.

The three new mobile devices – the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, the Xperia Z3 smartphone and the Xperia Z3 Compact – are married together by features such as PlayStation 4 remote play, water resistance, and up to two days of standby power.

Sony’s new flagship smartphone is the Xperia Z3, which comes with a smaller sister product, the 4.6-inch Xperia Z3 Compact. The main event features a 20.7MP rear camera with a 25mm Sony G Lens and, like its predecessor the Xperia Z2, shoots 4K video.

The Z3 sports a slightly different look, though, as Sony has made this model with new materials, including an aluminium frame with reinforced corners. The whole package is a mere 7.3mm thick, encasing a 5.2-inch HD Triluminos display with a reduced bezel for tighter dimensions.

The Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is the first 8-inch device from Sony and lays claim to being the slimmest and lightest waterproof tablet on the market. It sports a full-HD Triluminos display, 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor, 3GB RAM, 8.1MP rear camera and 2.2MP front-facing camera.

As well as these mobile devices, Sony revealed two new wearables today: the SmartWatch 3 and SmartBand Talk. The former is Sony’s third-generation smartwatch and the first to operate on Google’s Android Wear OS, while the latter is an improvement on the original SmartBand with the addition of a 1.4-inch E-Ink display, as well as a microphone and speaker combination to enable the wearer to make and receive calls via a paired smartphone.

All of these products announced today by Sony will be released in Ireland by the close of this month.
