Eircom reveals new eVision video on demand service for blockbuster movies

23 Sep 2014

Telecoms operator Eircom has revealed a new video on demand service comprised of 600 blockbuster movies – including some fresh from the cinema – for its eVision fibre-based digital TV service.

The operator has struck deals with Hollywood studios Fox, Universal, Paramount, Sony and Disney as well as leading independent studios to provide the service.

Once users download a movie a charge is added to their Eircom bill.

A ‘Films Everywhere’ component of the service allows the users to watch the film as many times as they like within 48 hours through their eVision box or on laptops, tablets or smartphones in the home or out and about.

Latest releases cost from €3.99 to rent with library movies available from €1.99. Some of the movies that are currently available to rent include 12 Years a Slave, Noah, Amazing Spiderman 2, Dallas Buyers Club, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Divergent as well as Irish movies Calvary and The Stag.

It’s Hollywood, wherever and whenever you want it

“This is a distinct proposition that allows customers watch the latest Hollywood releases at home, on any mobile device while you’re out and about or even on holidays through a wide range of devices or through their eVision box,” explained Eircom Consumer managing director Kevin White.

“This superb new offering for eVision customers demonstrates our commitment to continuously upgrading our service – giving customers what they want and where they want it.

“We are starting with a catalogue of over 600 movies and this will increase to over 1,000 movies in the next few months. Since we launched eVision last October, we have been consistently offering our customers new added benefits and the launch of on Demand is the next step to providing real value for money,” White said.

Digital television is a vital part of Eircom’s major investment in fibre infrastructure. The company, which in recent weeks passed the 1 millionth premises with 100Mbps fibre broadband, also recently revealed plans to expand its broadband rollout plan from 1.4m homes and businesses to 1.6m by 2016.
