Sources continue to claim a new iPad announcement from Apple is imminent, and the latest whispers have suggested that the latest devices will go for gold.

New 9.7-inch iPads from Apple could be revealed as soon as this month, adding a gold edition to the current colour combinations of silver/white and space grey/black, according to sources cited by Bloomberg.

Apple introduced gold colouring to its iPhone range when it launched the iPhone 5s and this has continued with the two new iPhones announced last month.

It now looks like these three colour options will be available for the next-generation iPad Air, the first of which was unveiled last year.

In the time that has passed since the first 9.7-inch iPad Air was announced, Apple has upped the screen size of its smartphone devices with the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus.

It appears that this same strategy could be applied to Apple’s tablets, also, with rumours of a 12.9-inch iPad intensifying.

Along with the 7.9-inch iPad mini, a 12.9-inch slate would add a third size category to the iPad range and put Apple in step with other devices targeting professional users, such as the 12.2-inch Galaxy Tab Pro from Samsung and Microsoft’s 12-inch Surface Pro 3.

Last year, sales of the iPad reached US$32bn but volumes have declined for the past two quarters in a row. For Apple, an injection of new stock hitting the right mark with consumers could prompt a turnaround.
