US fans of Games of Thrones, Girls and True Detective can rejoice as HBO has finally decided to offer its shows via online streaming.

Richard Plepler, chair and CEO of HBO, made the announcement at a Time Warner investor meeting on Wednesday, 15 October.

Following a presentation on significant growth opportunities in the US pay-TV market, Plepler added that there are 10m broadband-only homes in the US, adding, “That is a large and growing opportunity that should no longer be left untapped. It is time to remove all barriers to those who want HBO.”

And so, laying down the gauntlet for Netflix, HBO will offer a stand-alone over-the-top streaming service in the US in 2015, targeting the flush market of 80m homes in the US without this premium cable and satellite offering.

This keen focus on the vast US market is all that seems to be on the agenda for HBO for now, with no indication as yet of an internaational roll-out.

HBO is an operating subsidiary of Time Warner.
