New Spotify feature allows smartphones to be used as a remote for desktop music

7 Nov 2014

Music-streaming service Spotify now allows subscribers to control music on their desktop PC, laptop or TV by using the smartphone and tablet app as a remote.

The new capability is part of Spotify’s Connect feature, which also allows Spotify music to be shifted between hand-held devices and different Wi-Fi connected hardware. As pointed out by TechCrunch, the upgrade, like all of Spotify Connect’s components, is only available to paying subscribers.

Users won’t, however, be able to use the new feature to play Taylor Swift’s latest album 1989 after the singer removed her entire back catalogue from the service earlier this week. Swift had previously been vocal against streaming and its impact on the value of music.

Spotify responded by posting a playlist of various artists featuring 15 tracks that, when the titles are read continuously, it spells out: “Hey Taylor, we wanted to play your amazing love songs and they’re not here right now. We want you back with us and so do, do, do your fans.”
