Microsoft sells 10m Xbox One consoles in US – claims it is outselling Sony’s PS4

Microsoft says sales of its latest generation Xbox One games console are skyrocketing and the company is about to pass the 10m threshold for the number of consoles sold.

In recent days Microsoft brought the Halo: Master Chief Collection to the Xbox One platform and new games being launched include Assassin’s Creed Unity, Sunset Overdrive and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.

The company said that its aggressive pricing for the latest generation console – sans the Kinect controller – at US$345 in the US is proving to be a hit with consumers.

The price cut has proven popular among consumers in the US and is enabling Microsoft to close the gap with Sony, which reported sales of 10m PlayStation 4 consoles in January.

“The response to this wave of blockbuster game releases and new bundles has been amazing, and sales have skyrocketed since the new price took effect on 2 November,” said Yusuf Mehdi, vice president of Devices and Studios at Microsoft.

“Compared to the previous week, Xbox One sales in the US have more than tripled, which is exciting as more and more friends will be playing together this holiday.

“As we head into the busy holiday season Xbox One led generation 8 console sales in the US for the past two weeks. Shortly, we will have sold in to retailers more than 10 million Xbox One consoles,” Mehdi said.
