As any PC gamer will tell you, the dawning of the autumn sale on the Steam gaming platform is so important that they will most likely include it in their household budget. As expected, the internet reacts in memes.

Beginning tomorrow, 26 November, and running until 6 December, the event has become legendary because of the massive discounts offered for many major titles and older AAA games.

In fact, many games bought on the platform are never played, having been picked up during the Steam autumn sale. A survey undertaken in April revealed 37pc of all games purchased on Steam are never played, simply because they are bought in bulk in bundles or at very low prices.

In fact, the survey found only 493m of the total 781m games purchased on Steam, the equivalent of 63pc, have only been played once.

For those wondering why there is an autumn sale happening now, rest assured ‘winter is coming’ for Steam players. The winter sale is due just before Christmas on 20 December.

According to Steam’s own statistics, the most-played game on the platform currently is Dota 2, which as of today has had a peak number of 826,458 players.

For those not terribly familiar with the corporate structure of the company that brought the Half Life series into the world, the company is led by co-founder and managing director Gabe Newell, who appears in many, many Steam sale-related memes.

Strangely, Spongebob Squarepants appears to be a regular feature of Steam sale memes.

But then as the dust settles on 6 December after yet another Steam sale, we can finally rest easy – until 20 December.
