If Google searches were a barometer for the Irish psyche in any given year, then in 2014 the Irish were World Cup football nuts, celebrity obsessed Kim Kardashian fans and dedicated followers of Garth Brooks. It’s not pretty.
According to Google’s annual Zeitgeist, which lists the most searched for subjects in any given year, it would seem that even though Ireland didn’t make it to the World Cup, it was there virtually in spirit.
World Cup 2014 was the top trending search term of 2014 as well as the top trending news story alongside the Garth Brooks debacle and celebrity photo hack. World Cup 2014 was also the top trending event.
Frozen was the top trending movie of 2014 along with Divergent, American Hustle and Dallas Buyers Club.
Strangely Peppa Pig pipped Love/Hate as the top trending TV show, ahead of even Game of Thrones and Home and Away.
Honeymooners and mooners
“How to…” searches showed how eager we are to learn new skills, creative types were keen to know “how to draw”, “how to crochet” and “how to knit” while the romantics were interested in “how to kiss” and the not so romantics wanted to know “how to shift.”
Kim Kardashian’s honeymoon in Ireland made her top the list of top trending people followed by Kate Middleton.
The Garth Brooks “will he/won’t he play Croke Park?” debacle ensured the country crooner featured across all lists including top trending searches, top trending news, top trending music artists and top trending people.
“Google’s Year in Search gives us the best snapshot of what moved, inspired, shocked and intrigued us in 2014,” Google’s Cera Ward explained.
“With so many of us now having multiple computers, phones and tablets immediately to hand, these results are the most accurate and comprehensive collection of what Ireland’s been talking about this year.”
