Man caught by customs in China smuggling 94 iPhones, via Sina.com
Customs officials on the Chinese border with Hong Kong have caught a man smuggling 94 iPhones by shrink-wrapping them to his body.
Apparently the man was spotted because of his weird walk – the downfall of many a crime lord – over the weekend.
As reported by Sina, inspectors at the Futian crossing in Shenzhen, a southern Chinese district bordering Hong Kong, noticed the man and searched his luggage, finding nothing.
They then searched his body and somehow managed to find the thousands of euros worth of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus devices.
According to CNN, there’s quite a black market in China for smuggled iPhones from Hong Kong. Although available both sides of the border, differing duties mean that an iPhone that costs around €850 in China, only costs €700 in Hong Kong.
Officials estimated the total value of the devices worn by the unlucky smart-thief to exceed 300,000 yuan (€41,000).
According to Shenzhen customs officials, 282 iPhones have been discovered on a total of 18 smugglers since December.
That number averages out at around 15 iPhones per smuggler. This chap’s 94 clearly leads the way, which is something.
