Apple pins a deal with Pinterest – curated App Store board on the way

12 Feb 2015

Consumer tech titan Apple has struck a deal with online scrapbook Pinterest whereby specific App Pins will allow people to buy apps without leaving Pinterest.

The move is effectively an extension of Pinterest’s Rich Pins platform, Pins that do more in terms of finding locations, buying products and pinning articles to read later.

Both Apple and Pinterest have created a new App Pin that lets users install apps they’ve discovered through Pinterest recommendations without having to go to the App Store.

A prominent blue Install button will appear alongside the standard Pin it button to show you that the app can be installed within a few taps.

The new Pinterest app is now live on the App Store.

Apple has also created its own curated App Store board on Pinterest.

“Over the years, we’ve added extra info to Pins to make them even more useful,” said Julie Black, product manager at Pinterest.

“Recipe Pins list ingredients and cook time, product Pins show you price and availability, and article Pins give you a headline and story description.

“Now if you’re on your iPhone or iPad, you’ll see another kind of Pin: app Pins. Let’s say you’re Pinning workout inspiration to your Marathon Training board. If you see a fitness app that helps you reach your goals, you can download it right from Pinterest,” Black said.
