Home comforts: IKEA develops furniture with wireless charge points for your phones

2 Mar 2015

Swedish retailer IKEA is bringing out furniture with built-in, wireless charge points compatible with 80 different smartphones and other devices.

In what could prove a popular move, IKEA’s charge points are Qi based, however, devices that don’t enjoy capabilities to match with this will be catered for with separate, additional options.

Wireless charging covers for iPhone 4, 5/5S, 6 and Samsung Galaxy S3, S4 and S5 will be available, as well as a USB port to keep everybody else happy. The pads use transmitter and receiver coils to generate a magnetic field, the energy from which charges the devices.

“Through research and home visits, we know that people hate cable mess,” said IKEA’s Jeanette Skjelmose. “They worry about not finding the charger and running out of power. Our new innovative solutions, which integrate wireless charging into home furnishings, will make life at home simpler.”

The furniture range includes floor, table and work lamps, two bedside tables, and a selection of charging pads to add to any office space. There is also a charge point that could be added to any piece of furniture, and a multiple charge point amongst the range.

Available from next month, the range is already gaining attention at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, in part thanks to Samsung’s work with the Swedish company.

That’s because the Korean tech giant’s latest releases – the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge – feature universally compatible wireless charging technology.

“Mobile devices have become a natural part of our lives – our ability to pair a simple wireless charging process with IKEA’s household furniture gives everyone the opportunity to more comfortably and conveniently enjoy their smartphone experience like never before,” said Jean-Daniel Ayme, deputy president of European telecommunication operations at Samsung Electronics.
