Chromecast now supports regular TV remotes for play and pause functionality

18 Mar 2015

A fairly understated firmware update by Google seems to have improved Chromecasts significantly, now allowing users to press play and pause with a remote, rather than using their phone.

Users on Reddit discovered the update, which sees Chromecasts using HDMI-CEC, an extension that makes sending commands between your TV and any attached device possible.

Google didn’t announce the upgrade, perhaps because not everyone’s TV will support the function, but it’s still a significant change.

It all plays into the upcoming tranche of Android TVs making their way to stores around the world this year. It has been reported that these will come with a remote control, utilising the same function that the Chromecast has been upgraded to host.

Search giant Google is at the dawn of a fresh battle with consumer tech giant Apple, whose own TVs are reportedly partnering with HBO NOW stream. Apple is even linked to its own streaming service to rival the likes of Hulu and Netflix.
