Spotify launches PlayStation Music service that allows songs to be played in-game

PlayStation 4 users can now access Spotify’s library of music while playing their favourite games with the roll out of the PlayStation Music app.

The partnership between both firms was announced in January, with Spotify replacing Sony’s failed attempt at creating its own music streaming service, Music Unlimited.

PlayStation Music will roll out to Spotify users in 41 countries today on both the PS4 and PS3 consoles, but only PS4 gamers will also be able to play and listen to music at the same time. The app will also become available on Xperia smartphones and tablets at a later date.

“Music has always been a big part of gaming,” says Gustav Söderström, chief product officer at Spotify.

“I remember playing computer games like Quake and Counter-Strike with my favourite tunes on in the background – taking the experience to a whole new level. With today’s launch, we’re bringing back that magic of gaming with music – all in a beautifully designed and smooth experience that looks great on the big screen.”

John Kodera, president of Sony Network Entertainment International, added: “PlayStation Network is the premier destination for digital entertainment and we’re excited that millions of users around the world can now enjoy the most compelling music service on their PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 consoles

“With Spotify as the foundation of PlayStation Music, we’ll continue to evolve the service to deliver the best entertainment experience that gamers have come to expect from PlayStation Network.”

Last week, Spotify reported a 1,900pc rise in One Direction plays following Wednesday’s news that Zayn Malik had left the boy band. In what the company has called a ‘spike of sadness’, the massive jump occurred in the UK between 8pm and 9pm on Wednesday night as Directioners came to terms with the tragic news of Zayne’s departure.
