Six-year-old Harry Kane has been named the overall winner of the Doodle 4 Google competition – the Wicklow student will now see his doodle feature on Google.ie.

Kane’s colourful doodle will go live this Friday and stay there for the day, while he also won a Chromebook and a €5,000 scholarship towards his studies.

The prizes didn’t stop there either, with his teacher winning a Chromebook and his school, St. Gerard’s School in Bray, receiving €10,000.

The theme of this year’s Doodle 4 Google, it’s seventh edition, was ‘My Perfect Day’, with Harry describing his doodle as: “My perfect day is on my summer holidays. I love to swim in the sea, eat yummy ice cream, sail on a boat, fly my kite and build sandcastles.”

Harry, along with the other 74 competitors, was invited to Google’s EMEA HQ in Dublin this afternoon to find out who won, with 140,000 votes registered online to help decide the victor.

“This is the seventh year of the competition and we are constantly amazed at the number of entries that keeps growing year on year,” said Google’s VP of sales and operations, Ronan Harris.

“This year we had a record 5,085 entries and I would like to thank each student who got involved. The level of creativity shown by this year’s doodles was also extremely impressive.

“This year’s theme of ‘My Perfect Day’ really captured the imagination of the doodlers and allowed them to create something that was important to them. This is what was particularly special about Harry’s doodle.”

Other winners included Pearl McHugh from Holy Family National School in Donegal, Freyia McDonald from Loreto College Junior School in Dublin, Chloe O’Dwyer from John the Baptist Community School in Limerick and Martha Knight from Firhouse Community School in Dublin.
