Software company Symantec has uncovered a sophisticated new spying bug that experts say has hit Ireland significantly.
According to BBC reports, Ireland is one of three countries most affected by the software, called Regin, along with Russia and Saudi Arabia.
Symantec say that due to the sophistication of the bug it was likely created by a government. Regin has the ability to capture screenshots, record passwords and recover deleted files.
“It looks like it comes from a Western organisation,” said Sian John, a security strategist at Symantec.
“It’s the level of skill and expertise, the length of time over which it was developed.”
The software is thought to have been in operation for six years now.
