Carphone Warehouse invests €6m in Irish data centre

Mobile phone retailer Carphone Warehouse, which is entering the Irish mobile market next year as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), has invested €6m in a new data centre.

Carphone Warehouse intends to enter the Irish mobile market space through a partnership with Three. Carphone Warehouse intends to capture 6pc of the Irish mobile market within its first six years.

The new mobile operator represents a total €30m investment in Ireland and will lead to the creation of 50 jobs, as well as indirect employment through indigenous partnerships.

As part of Three’s purchase of O2 Ireland, the EU laid down conditions that the mobile operator would have to provide network capacity to two MVNOs in order to facilitate competition in the market.

UPC was the first to sign an MVNO deal with Hutchison Whampoa-owned Three and next in line to launch its own network in 2015 is Carphone Warehouse.

The new data centre in Citywest in Dublin will house technical infrastructure powered by Huawei and Mvneco.

“Our plan is to offer a highly innovative, next-generation service that is currently not available in today’s mobile market,” said Carphone Warehouse Ireland managing director Peter Scott.

“To fully realise this, and to support the massive amounts of data generated by consumer mobile use, we require dependable, future-proof technology.

“The new data centre will not only deliver reliability, but give Carphone Warehouse the necessary infrastructure to support an innovative offering with a real competitive edge.”
