A man has been shot dead after apparently attempting to gain entry to the US National Security Agency (NSA)’s headquarters in Fort Meade, Maryland.

It is understood that an SUV truck drove into the gates at the NSA’s headquarters.

NSA security shot dead one of the two men in the vehicle.

A further two people, including a person in uniform, are understood to have also been injured during the attack.

The incident happened at around 9.30am local time in Maryland.

Fort Meade houses more than 11,000 military personnel, as well as 29,000 civilian workers.

The NSA, whose activities gained international attention following revelations by Edward Snowden about the extent of its spy activities, is tasked with gathering intelligence on potential threats to the US as well as defending the US against cyber attacks.
