VICS Information and Technology Day

22nd Nov 2008

In recent years, huge advances have been made in helping visually impaired people access technology with the same ease enjoyed by sighted people. It's now possible for a blind person to browse the internet thanks to text-to-speech software. Partially sighted people can read standard print documents with the aid of portable magnification devices.

VICS will be showcasing a selection of products and developments in this area at its Information and Technology Day at University College Cork (UCC) on Saturday, November 22nd.

Those who attend can look forward to a varied line-up of speakers who all have a strong appreciation of the needs of people with disabilities in relation to technology. The presentations will be followed by an exhibition which will enable visitors to sample the latest products and talk to the speakers.

VICS Treasurer Declan Meenagh will introduce attendees to the world of blogging, podcasting and RSS, while Ciaran Ferry will outline the progress that has been made in providing greater access to digital television. Ronan McGuirk will outline the accessibility features built into the Apple Mac. A number of technology distributors will be on hand to demonstrate a range of devices, such as electronic travel aids, e-book readers, Braille displays, and magnification equipment.

The action takes place at the Electronic Engineering Building at UCC on the 22nd November. Presentations will take place from 11.00am-1.15pm, while the exhibition will run from 2.15 onwards.
