Mozilla Firefox for iOS app is now available in App Store

Mozilla’s new Firefox for iOS app is now finally available for users of iPhone, iPad or iPod touch devices.

Mozilla’s new Firefox for iOS app is now available for users of iPhone, iPad or iPod touch devices, which signals the end of the organisation’s stance against developing software for the App Store.

Finally available in the App Store, the version 1.1 of Firefox for iOS promises to be fast, smart and personal and includes a private browsing feature to make specific tabs and browsing history private.

The app can be downloaded on Apple devices that are running iOS 8.2 or newer.

Mozilla is a free software community created in 1998 by members of Netscape, which has since spawned the Firefox web browser, the Thunderbird email client, the Firefox OS and Bugzilla bug tracking system.

A logical step for Mozilla’s Firefox

The foundation has always adhered to a core set of values while pushing its own technology agenda, including creating its own Firefox Marketplace for HTML5 applications and by March 2015 it had nearly 6,000 apps.

The move to create its own app for the iOS App Store may be a bow to the reality that the iPhone platform is going from strength to strength, with Apple selling 48m iPhone devices in its last quarter.

Indeed, many of its users would be using Firefox on Mac devices and as browsers today tend to unite the mobile and desktop experience it makes logical sense for Mozilla to finally create an iOS app.
