Four Dublin ITs to merge into new technology university

10 Jan 2011

Four Dublin colleges are set to make a joint redesignation in order to become Ireland’s first technological university.

According to the Irish Independent, the colleges involved include Dublin Institute of Technology, Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Institute of Technology Tallaght and Institute of Technology Blanchardstown.

The Hunt report will be published tomorrow on the future of higher education, which says a new type of technological university could be formed from these merged institutes of technology. It has ruled out any new traditional form of university.

Meetings have already occurred between the four colleges and these will increase following this report. The presidents of these colleges have agreed that Ireland does not need a new traditional college and they welcome the need for a new type of institution.

These presidents see this new form of university as being “practice-led, strongly informed by research and engaged on many levels with society and with industry.”
