Motorola says its patents were filed more than three years before TiVo's patents
Communications giant Motorola is suing TiVo, alleging the TV provider infringed its patents for digital video recorder (DVR) technology.
Motorola is understood to be seeking to protect its interests after TiVo sued Verizon, which uses Motorola’s technology, for alleged patent infringement.
“TiVo is attempting to assert its patents against technology disclosed and claimed in Motorola Mobility's patents, despite the fact that Motorola Mobility's patents were filed more than three years before TiVo's patents,” Motorola said in a statement.
Motorola says it acquired its DVR patents when it bought a company called Imedia, which filed its patents in April 1995.
Motorola says TiVo’s patents apply the same technology invented by Imedia engineers.
