Galway Education Centre to give schools Google Sketchup Pro

12 Mar 2012

The Galway Education Centre has signed a contract with Google to distribute 3D modelling application Google Sketchup Pro for free to all interested Irish primary and secondary schools.

The application lets students create 3D models from scratch or by using existing data. They can import drawings, photos, aerial images and other data and can then use the application’s tools to create 3D models.

It can be used to design objects ranging from kitchen utensils to buildings. Students and teachers can also share their projects, resources and images with others online.

As part of the new agreement, the Galway Education Centre will distribute the programme for free to all interested schools across the country. A number of schools have already signed up for a licence for the software.

“We are thrilled to be working together with Google on this project,” said Bernard Kirk, director of the Galway Education Centre.

“Through our other projects like The FIRST LEGO League and The CREST Awards, we know just how capable and talented Irish students are.

“We also know how dedicated and driven many of our teachers are and to be in a position to offer them a world-class programme like Google Sketchup Pro at no cost to the school is wonderful,” he said.

Schools interested in getting Google Sketchup Pro can contact the Galway Education Centre online.
