Researchers at the Irish web science institute Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI) have created a free app for visitors to Galway during the upcoming Volvo Ocean Race Festival.

Galway City is preparing to host the final leg of the 2012 Volvo Ocean Race from 30 June to 8 July. Researchers at DERI, which is based at based at NUI Galway, have developed the app to allow users to view a full festival programme, as well as provide visitor information about Galway City.

The 'Volvo Ocean Race Festival Galway' app is available for free from the Apple App Store and from the Google Play Android store. DERI said the app will be updated and improved as new information becomes available.

The DERI researchers said they have also integrated some of their technologies, including 'Connect and Chat' and 'Tweet Cliques' so people can access the most relevant tweets relating to the festival.

During the Galway festival, a 17-acre Global Village business expo will showcase Ireland's technological progress in the areas of innovation, food, green and the marine. There will also be a sustainability summit during the Volvo Ocean Race Festival. It will take place on 5 July in the Global Village.
