The British design and sustainability expert John Thackara is set to give a lecture at University College Dublin (UCD) next week as part of this year’s Innovation Dublin festival where he will be talking about ‘regeneration’ design.

The 2012 Innovation Dublin festival is kicking off today, with events happening in Dublin to celebrate innovation and creation until 26 October.

Thackara's lecture is being organised by UCD Innovation with the Institute of Designers in Ireland. Having travelled the world for 30 years to look at how communities have been taking steps to achieve a sustainable future, Thackara will be covering how individuals and organisations can get involved in 'regeneration design'.

He said he will be looking at how regeneration, rather than consumption design, can enable society to thrive in a no-growth economic setting.

“Practical examples of regeneration design include computer recyclers, hardware re-mixers, textile upcyclers, local designers, community doctors and ecological teachers," said Thackara.

His seminar, entitled 'Thriving in a no-growth economy', will take place in UCD's William Jefferson Clinton auditorium on 25 October from 6-8pm.
