Rails Girls rolls into Dublin to teach women to code

8 Feb 2013

The NDRC in Dublin will tonight host ‘Rails Girls’, a workshop aimed at teaching women how to code using the Ruby on Rails web-based programming language.

Rails Girls is an international movement that aims to bridge the gender divide in tech by teaching women how to code.

Ireland will be the 36th country in the world to host the event.

A Rails Girls workshop takes place tonight from 6pm to 8pm and Saturday from 9am to 6pm.

In 2012 alone, there were 40 ‘Rails Girls’ workshops worldwide.

Lack of female developers in Ireland

“There is no doubt that, as is the case globally, there is a lack of female developers in Ireland and events like ‘Rails Girls’ not only directly address this issue but also aids in building a more inclusive and vibrant tech community,” NDRC spokeswoman Fiona Hyland explained.

“The event has already generated significant interest with 130 women applying to take part. Unfortunately, space was limited but the 45 attendees that will attend over the two days will not only learn how to code but also network with programmers and other like-minded people. The environment will be fun and relaxed with 25 coaches on hand over the two days,” Hyland said.
