Tech giant Microsoft is working on a project that aims to transform shaky camera footage into seamless and smooth video footage.
The technology in development is particularly aimed at those using GoPRo cameras, which are often used by those in extreme sports to record themselves undertaking spectacular feats. In most cases, the footage turns out to be less than anticipated in terms of quality.
Now, however, the team on the Microsoft Research project is working on turning this footage into a ‘hyperlapse’ that speeds up the original footage by a speed of 10 using an algorithm to smooth out textures rather than just speed up an already hard-to-watch video, according to TechCrunch.
This method works by combining a number of the images from different viewpoints to create one whole image that follows the camera’s progression.
In the video Microsoft has showcased online, the team behind the technology hopes to launch it sometime in the near future as an app available on Windows Phones to use with both existing phones as well as GoPro equipment.
Its first official launch is expected as early as this week at Canada’s SIGGRAPH conference in the city of Vancouver.
