Innovation Ireland Forum: Prof Linda Doyle on innovation and the new CONNECT centre

23 Oct 2014

Linda Doyle, director, CTVR

We spoke to Prof Linda Doyle ahead of tomorrow’s Innovation Ireland Forum in Dublin about the new SFI CONNECT centre and about cultivating creativity and innovation.

Doyle is a professor at Trinity College Dublin, in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. She is also director of CTVR, the national telecommunication research centre that carries out industry-informed research, and which will become part of the new Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) research centre CONNECT.

Earlier this week, the Irish Government announced that it, along with industry, would co-fund five new world-class SFI research centres in Ireland, bringing the total number of such centres to 12. This funding of €245m marks the second tranche of funding under the SFI Research Centres Programme; last year €300m (€200m from SFI and €100m from industry) in funding was announced for seven research centres.

CONNECT, the Centre for Future Networks and Communications, is one of the five new centres to receive funding. CONNECT will address key challenges that face society via new and varied forms of networked services – to include mobile internet, connected health, smart agriculture, smart grids and metering, and environmental monitoring services.

While Doyle’s main areas of research are wireless communications, reconfigurable networks, cognitive radio and spectrum management, she also has a strong interest in the intersection of art and technology and some of her research is focused in this domain.

Doyle was one of our 100 Top Women in STEM this year, so we’re particularly delighted that she features in our upcoming Innovation Ireland Forum.
