Facebook to simplify privacy settings

25 May 2010

Following an onslaught of criticisms from users who were left unsure about how public their private information had become, social-networking site Facebook is implementing a new set of privacy settings for all users on 26 May.

The company said it will post the details on its blog.

Facebook users have threatened to leave the site on 31 May as a result of the questionable privacy settings and even founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted the company had “missed the mark.”

“I can confirm that our new, simpler privacy settings are starting to roll out tomorrow evening so stay tuned on our blog for more details,” a Facebook spokesperson said.

Notable changes to Facebook’s privacy settings started in December, when the company changed the default rule on profile information – it became accessible online unless the user specifically opted out.

This past April, Facebook data was opened to third-party websites.

Its current privacy policy has 50 different settings and 170 options, BBC News Online reported.
