Twitter’s lifeline – its tweets – seem to have disappeared: following issues with both absent Twitter timelines and faulty tweet counts it seems as though user timelines are completely empty.
Users woke up this morning to discover that their tweet count had dropped dramatically and not only this but also their history or Twitter timeline is switching between a limited few and completely empty page.
“We’re currently experiencing site availability issues resulting from the failed enhancement of a new approach to timeline caching. Our infrastructure and operations engineers are currently working to resolve this,” Twitter explained on its status page.
Twitter Places
So while this means that Twitter has not lost all of our tweets it does mean we won’t be able to peruse our history for awhile. In the meantime, Twitter is adding a geo-location option to tweets with the help of TomTom and Localeze.
A new service, which will soon roll this out to users in 65 countries, will allow for adding your location from a link below the Tweet box.
Twitter Places will work on both mobile and desktop so there will be updates to the iPhone, Android and BlackBerry apps, as well as support for browsers Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and Chrome.
There is also Foursquare and Gowalla integration, which is a clever move considering most users of these services have them linked back to Twitter, and new API functionality will allow for developers to integrate Twitter Places into their apps.
