App sales may soon overtake music sales on iTunes

App developer and industry analyst Asymco have found that iTunes app sales are accelerating much faster than music sales and may soon overtake them entirely.

Asymco notes that, based on data retrieved from the music and app store, apps have reached the same total amount of downloads in 2.2 years as music downloads had after five years.

It also predicts the totals are likely to be equal by the end of the year, at 13 billion each.

Asymco found last week that music sales are slowing down, further putting app downloads in a position to overtake music downloads.

This data comes a week after Apple announced the launch of its new music-based social media network Ping, along with updates to the iPod Touch and iPod Nano ranges.
