Google doodle marks Lennon’s 70th birthday

8 Oct 2010

An interactive doodle on internet search giant Google’s homepage has been designed to mark what would have been the former Beatle’s 70th birthday on Saturday, 9 October.

Internet users can click on the doodle, upon which a 32-second clip of his popular song Imagine begins to play while the doodle unfurls into different drawings of nature, each forming the shape of each letter in the word Google, before reverting back to a black-and-white doodle. Users can then click through to the YouTube version of the “video”.

Lennon was born in Liverpool, England, and became a worldwide superstar as one of four members of the pop group the Beatles. He developed a successful solo career after the band called it quits.

Mark David Chapman fatally shot Lennon on 8 December, 1980, outside the New York apartment building where Lennon lived with his wife, Yoko Ono. Chapman, 55, has been behind bars since the shooting.
