Chinese network launching own-brand smartphone

18 Nov 2010

A Chinese mobile operator has said it will bring out its own-brand smartphone in order to generate more business for its 3G data network.

China Unicom, or China United Netcom (Hong Kong) Ltd, the second-largest network in China, has announced it will launch the Uphone.

According to Reuters, it will be manufactured by Huawei Technologies and ZTE Corp.

No price yet

The company said it had no pricing plan in place yet, due to the fact the phone will only be released at year’s end.

China Unicom, a government-run telecommunications operator in the People’s Republic of China, is the only company authorised to sell the Apple iPhone 4 and had insufficient stock to meet user demand last September.
