Taiwan computer maker Acer has revealed it plans to release three touchscreen tablets next year, with the first – a 10.1-inch tablet computer – based on Microsoft’s Windows platform.
The Microsoft Windows tablet computer will debut in February. It will then be followed by two Google Android-based tablet computers, a 7-inch and a 10.1-inch.
Acer has also unveiled a smartphone with a 4.8-inch screen based on Android and a dual screen laptop with two 14-inch screens which it has called the Iconica Touchbook.
Tablet mania
Activity in the tablet computer market is increasing daily. Earlier today, LG revealed its Windows 7-based tablet computer while yesterday it emerged that Samsung has sold 600,000 tablet computers in the first four weeks of the Galaxy Tab’s launch.
This is still trailing Apple, which sold 1m iPad devices in the first four weeks of launch.
Acer has not yet determined pricing for the new tablets, nor has it given the devices a name.
Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci said computer buyers’ spending patterns reflect their desire to consume content, not just produce it.
The computer manufacturer has relied heavily on the netbook market over the last two years and fancies a slice of the US$14bn tablet market.
