Most consumers not buying music online – study

Less than 20pc of internet users around the globe pay for downloads of songs, and even fewer pay for downloads of complete albums, a study released by Nielsen Music suggests.

Europeans and Americans are the most likely to download music and pay for it, while most internet users in Asia, Latin America and the Middle East prefer free downloads.

The most popular means of accessing music online is by watching a video, followed by illegal downloading.

Internet users are three times more likely to watch a music video online than to buy a legal download of a song, the study shows.
