Google launches official Google Translate for iPhone app

9 Feb 2011

The official Google Translate for iPhone app is now available for download globally from the App Store, the internet search giant has announced.

The new app has all the features of the web app, and new ones, too: Users can enlarge translated text to full-screen size, view dictionary results for single words, and access starred translations and their translation histories even when they’re offline. The app also supports romanised text, such as Pinyin and Romaji.

The new app accepts voice input for 15 languages. Users can translate a word or phrase into one of more than 50 languages.

“You can also listen to your translations spoken out loud in one of 23 different languages. This feature uses the same new speech synthesiser voices as the desktop version of Google Translate we introduced last month,” Google software engineer Wenzhang Zhu said on the Official Google Blog.

The app is available in all iOS-supported languages, but users will require an iPhone or iPod touch iOS version 3 or later.
