Carphone Warehouse has confirmed the launch date for the Motorola Xoom tablet computer will be 4 April. The company also revealed that the Google Nexus S smartphone will launch in Ireland on 1 March.

The Motorola Xoom tablet computer running Android 3.0 ‘Honeycomb’ will launch around 4 April in the UK with a similar date pegged for Ireland.

“Carphone Warehouse Ireland will have it exclusively for a period although we cannot confirm when, pricing and networks yet,” a spokesperson said.

The Xoom, which won ‘Best in Show’ at CES last month, is the first tablet computer to run Android 3.0 Honeycomb and is powered by a dual core processor, each one running at 1GHz. It has a 10.1-inch widescreen HD display and is upgradable to 4G LTE. The device supports 1,080p HD video and HDMI output to display content on larger HD screens, and plays video and other rich web content seamlessly with Adobe Flash Player.

Google Nexus S to arrive on 1 March

The Nexus S Android 2.3 ‘Gingerbread’ smartphone will arrive in its Irish stores on 1 March and will be available from free on the Perfect Choice Access Plus 700 tariff with Vodafone.

The Nexus S is the first phone to run on Gingerbread, Google’s next update of the Android mobile operating system.

It was co-developed with Samsung and will feature NFC technology, front and rear-facing cameras, and a dedicated graphics processing unit (GPU) for mobile gaming and video playback.

The Nexus S will also have a new keyboard and text selection tool, internet (VoIP/SIP) calling, improved copy-and-paste functionality and gyroscope sensor support.
