Samsung to press ahead with Galaxy Tab 10.1 launch

8 Mar 2011

Despite expressing its view of Apple’s new iPad 2 as a “challenge” in terms of price and performance, consumer electronics giant Samsung is understood to be pressing ahead with its original plans to launch its tablet, the Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Last week, when Apple released the iPad 2, Lee Don-joo, executive vice-president of Samsung’s mobile division, said the 8.8mm thick iPad 2 presented new challenges for the company’s upcoming tablet.

“We will have to improve the parts that are inadequate,” Lee said Samsung’s forthcoming 10-inch tablet.

Samsung was understood to be perturbed by how slim the iPad 2 was at just 8.8mm – thinner than the iPhone 4.

The iPad 2’s price was also an issue for Samsung. The cost of the iPad 2 starts at US$499 and goes up to US$829. The original 7-inch Galaxy Tab was priced at US$900 in America. In Ireland, the Galaxy Tab is priced from €635.

Galaxy Tab 10.1 to be released ‘on schedule’

However, it has emerged Samsung intends to stick to release plans “as scheduled”.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 will be 10.9mm thick, but in its favour it is understood to come with an 8-megapixel camera, compared with the iPad 2’s 5-megapixel camera.
