Rebecca Black nominated for music award

7 Apr 2011

Rebecca Black, the 13-year-old aspiring singer who achieved internet fame with her video for Friday, has received a MTV O Music Awards nomination in the Favorite Animated GIF category.

Black’s fellow nominees in the category include pop star powerhouses Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Justin Bieber.

Black received the nomination despite being criticised and ridiculed for Friday, the video for which has gone viral on YouTube since being posted on the video-sharing site in February.

The Independent in the UK has dubbed Friday “the worst song ever” and other media critics have given the thumbs-down to its “monotone” sound and “simplistic lyrics”.

Black’s peer, Bieber, is also a nominee in the Best Fan Forum category, and Lady Gaga also received nods in the categories Innovative Artist, Must Follow Artist on Twitter and Favorite F**k Yeah Tumblr.

The MTV O Music Awards focus on online digital music and celebrates the artists within that sphere. The awards ceremony will be broadcast on 28 April on its website.
