The latest ABC Audit reveals the monthly unique browsers of RTÉ.ie have grown by some 12pc year-on-year, increasing from 4,052,723 to 4,519,738.

RTÉ.ie now attracts 353,701 daily unique browsers. Page impressions have increased by 8pc during the same period, growing to 81,402,512, the broadcaster said.

It said that May’s twin visits of Queen Elizabeth and US President Barack Obama also resulted in a huge surge in demand for audio visual streams which at 9.6m for the month was over double the figure for May 2010.

In addition to these figures, the RTÉ News Now app has now been downloaded more than 300,000 times and generates in excess of 47m page impressions per month. With the GAA Championship currently in full flight, the RTÉ GAA app, with more than 67,000 downloads, is performing strongly.

RTÉ continues to invest in digital strategy

RTÉ said it continues to invest in and improve its digital offering. Over the last year, the entertainment section has been re-launched as RTÉ TEN, bringing audiences the latest in entertainment news. RTÉ.ie also introduced redesigns of its homepage and its News and Business sites.

ABC also reported a growth in RTÉ.ie’s overseas audiences, with the figure of 1.75m, up half a million from the figure for May 2010. The current best performing country is the UK, with 643,196 unique browsers followed by the USA with 484,502.

“The latest ABC audit confirms the continuing appetite for RTÉ digital content both at home and abroad,” said Conor Mullen, commercial director, RTÉ Publishing.

“It is particularly encouraging to see that we are answering our audience’s desire to consume RTÉ content wherever and whenever they want through key services such as RTÉ Player and the RTÉ News Now app.

“The overall increase in traffic is testament to the wide and in-depth range of coverage of major Irish and international stories that RTÉ.ie offers, from breaking news to live blogs and trackers,” Mullen said.
