Samsung to launch instant messaging app called ChatON

29 Aug 2011

Samsung will release an app called ChatON which will offer free instant messaging over a range of smartphones, feature phones, PCs and tablets.

ChatON will allow users to instant message each other for free across multiple platforms, which will include iOS, Android and BlackBerry smartphones, along with tablets and feature phones.  As well as mobile chat, the service uses a web client to share communications between mobile and PC.

Its basic functionality will let users share text, pictures, calendars and contacts. Its advanced features for smartphones will let users share an animated message, which lets them hand-write texts, add audio and choose background pictures. It will also include the ability to see how often users communicate with eachother.

“With ChatON, Samsung has vastly simplified mobile communication by allowing users to connect to our upcoming feature phones and all major smartphones in the market,”said Ho Soo Lee, head of Media Solution Centre at Samsung Electronics, in a statement.

ChatON will launch next month in 120 countries and will be shown at the upcoming IFA conference.
