Google and RIAA at loggerheads over free MP3 app
Google appears to be refusing requests by the powerful Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) to remove a popular Android app that enables users to download copyrighted music onto their phones.
The app, MP3 Music Download Pro, allows users to download copyrighted music onto their phones for free.
According to PCmag.com, the RIAA believes the app is being used for piracy in the same way as Kazaa and LimeWire, which the industry organisation sued successfully.
It joins other Android apps, like Easy MP3 Downloader and MP3 Music Download Super, among apps that advertise the ability to search and download copyrighted music for free.
Despite a take-down notice issued in August, Google declined to take down the app on the basis it felt the app could be used for legitimate purposes.
