Google’s ‘Let it Snow’ Easter egg causes a blizzard of searches

18 Dec 2011

The words ‘Easter egg’ and ‘festive’ don’t often belong together, but Google’s way of turning search festive via a software surprise has led to a virtual blizzard of searches for ‘Let it Snow’.

Easter eggs in the technology world are a term for the hidden surprises Google leaves in its search engine. The last great Easter egg was the ‘Do a Barrel Roll’ search in November that sent the user’s search screen on a 360-degree spin.

The ‘Let it Snow’ Easter egg that debuted over the weekend not only brought up search results for various versions of the famous yuletide song by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and others, but gradually snow begins falling from the top of the screen to the bottom of the screen.

The little snowflakes keep falling until the entire screen is misted over, leaving the top search queries barely visible. On the top right hand corner there’s a ‘Defrost’ button to clear the screen for those of you who feel like shouting, “Bah, humbug!”

Word of the Easter egg began to spread Saturday afternoon/evening until it became one of the most talked-about search queries of the weekend.

Nice one Google, happy Christmas.
