Pop star Lady Gaga’s 17,130,348 Twitter followers received a link yesterday that directed them to a website promising free Apple iPad 2 tablet computers, but it was all a fake, thanks to the work of hackers.

Lady Gaga learned her account was hacked when her fans, whom she calls “little monsters”, were spammed with the link.

“Monsters, I’m giving away FREE iPad2’s to each one of you in the spirit of the holidays :),” the link read.

Two more tweets followed the link but Lady Gaga’s team spotted and deleted them.

The singer has since changed her login details to further secure her account and assured her “little monsters” her Twitter account was back to normal.

“Phew. The hacking is over!” Lady Gaga tweeted. “And just in time, I’m on my way to Japan! So excited to spend Xmastime with my TokyoMonsters!”

In May this year, Lady Gaga became the first person to reach more than 10m followers on Twitter.
