UK newspaper The Guardian’s iPad edition has been downloaded more than half a million times since its launch last October. The app experienced 23,000 downloads on Christmas Day.

The app launched on 13 October with a three-month free trial, which ends on 13 January this year.

The iPad edition mirrors The Guardian’s Monday to Saturday papers. It includes the ability to read articles offline, sharing via Facebook and Twitter and compatibility with Instapaper to let users save articles to read later. It also has video content and links to related web articles.

The app is also offering the Guardian’s Weekend magazine from this Saturday onwards, a new feature implemented before the free trial ends.

Users can sign up for a monthly subscription through Newsstand on iOS 5 on the Apple App Store for stg£9.99. The Guardian’s six and seven day print subscribers will still get free access to the app once the free trial ends through their current subscription.
