Twitter exceeds 500m subscribers

23 Feb 2012

Watch out Facebook, Twitter is gaining fast on you! New figures reveal that Twitter has exceeded 500m subscribers. Within three months it is likely to hit the 600m milestone.

According to figures on Twopcharts, at the time of writing there were 500,600,455 subscribers with an average of 9.6 accounts being registered per second.

According to Twopcharts, Twitter looks set to hit the 600m milestone within 103 days, 13 hours and 44 minutes.

However, an important question needs to be asked about how active are these subscribers?

How many Twitter users are actually active?

According to Twopcharts’ own blog last year, when Twitter hit 300m registered accounts, some 45pc of accounts had never sent a tweet and about 20pc of active users have sent more than 10 tweets.

Only 10pc of Twitter users at that stage had sent more than 10 tweets.

So the big question really is how many Twitter users are really active – between 10pc and 20pc?
