Google Chrome becomes world’s top web browser for a day

Google’s Chrome browser managed to become the world’s most used web browser for a day on 18 March, according to new figures from Irish web analytics firm StatCounter.

According to StatCounter, Chrome managed to become the top web browser in regions such as India, Russia and Brazil, which contributed to the browser reaching the top spot worldwide for that day.

Chrome was also the No 1 browser in Ireland for that day, followed by Internet Explorer and Firefox.

In China and the US, Chrome is the second most-used browser and in Germany, it’s the third most-used browser.

“While it is only one day, this is a milestone,” commented Aodhan Cullen, CEO of StatCounter, while noting that Chrome still faces a battle against rivals Firefox and Internet Explorer for popularity.

“Whether Chrome can take the lead in the browser wars in the long term remains to be seen, however, the trend towards Chrome usage at weekends is undeniable.

“At weekends, when people are free to choose what browser to use, many of them are selecting Chrome in preference to IE,” said Cullen.

StatCounter’s data is based on more than 15bn page views per month, with 4bn views from the US.
