As the European Football Championship enters the final stages, Twitter has finally realised its popularity, creating a dedicated page for the hashtag #Euro2012.
Twitter’s first branded hashtag page launched earlier this month for #NASCAR, a sport that’s widely popular in the US but prompts little interest elsewhere.
Euro 2012, however, has piqued interest worldwide and – as the visualisation below demonstrates – you don’t need to have a team in it to show your support for the best that European football has to offer. On the day of the France v England game that's illustrated, tweets about the match came from 160 countries.
Though Twitter is jumping on the bandwagon a little bit late, the remaining quarter finals, semis and the ultimate final play-off will be easier to follow on the site through the posts selected for the dedicated page. Only the best and most relevant tweets from commentators, broadcasters, journalists, and players will feature here.
With two sports-focused hashtag pages on the go, it's likely we will see this trend continue as Wimbledon starts today and the 2012 Olympics comes at the end of July.
